This is beautiful. I needed to hear this in my life right now, thank you vai. The awareness and articulation is so pure and inspiring.
I've been hungry for that spark to pick up my guitar again after not finding time and energy for the last handful of years, and this made me nearly weep internally on how deeply I miss that dimension he's talking about. Vai's discription of it is flawless in the Sense that he was tapping into as he was trying to explain it 🙂

Near to the end of the video: That’s the difference right there between joe satriani and steve vai Between a teacher who was mechanically superb and student who took to a deeper level. As steve said, both are respected equally! It’s you who choose
I saw him live in 1993. I "discovered" him when he was still playing with Zappa so seeing him live was a wow experience. I've followed him and his evolution and still look to him for inspiration.
That was actually really useful. I’m just at the point of being happy with my technique and am improvising at a higher level than ever before. As you’ve pointed out, once you’ve put in the physical work and can play what you want, the mental work takes over and now the question is what do I want to play? The road has no end, but the way is beautiful.
Steve you are such an a amazing human being! This is a lesson and teaching in the true potential of spirituality and music. This is one of many of your gifts! thank you!
Amazing i really needed to hear this thank you wow im blown away ..i got this finally someone's agreed i sound like a robot…ok heres a bit of info sleep eat meditation then it wont seem so bleh ..i can see clearly its raining now haha raining rhythms and melodies
I am am actually recording this one What will I do with it? This week, every morning I will watch it again before even even touching my guitar. Then I will watch it again frome time to time and be honest with myself, do I still hold the flame? Thank you so much for this Steve Vai. Bless you
Dr. Steve Vai “Be patient, enjoy every little… The way you stay patient without getting frustrated is, instead of getting mad at yourself because your missing something you rejoice in every little accomplishment.” Steve Vai 5:46
Every video I’ve watched of this guy. He’s basically told me to think about playing it an then I’ll be able to play it. I like the theory but I’m no good at the practical 😂
There is always some guy on youtube that will show you the “top 10 tricks that every guitar player should know” or the “top 5 easy way to fake your way in a solo” and there is Steve Vai who show you how to live and feel your music. Love the man.
I am a man with less technique to point my point across. I can do tapping like Dave Mustaine not like Eddie Van Halen, but that tapping does not suit each solo I play. I play it sometimes as a second lead guitar over a riff only and it helps.
We all keep on failing and must learn from mistakes. But your words that 'enjoy it' is what kept me going on. I am enjoying already since I am an engineer and have that habit of NOT falling in a trap of making the same mistake again in all fields related to me – work or passion!
I know my limits (physical, financial, poor guitar gear) and I know my limitations (adjusting time for guitar with my work-family schedule). But I am enjoying what I do even with limited resources:)
I learnt guitar at the tender age of 42, I am 48 now. I have 3 albums on YouTube as a one man band and very less viewers because people do not have patience or attention span. If they do not find something catchy within first 5 seconds, they do not listen.
I am on the other end getting frustrated that no one is listening to what I am asking for – tell me where you want to me to develop more. But rarely anyone responds. So I became my own audience and find out my short comings, jot them down and try to improve. I am improving but again there is no listener.
Very nice to have this helpful conversation with a Guitar God! Thanks from India. P.S. If you ever allow me, I would send you a link to my album and ask your precious time not more than 10-12 minutes where my guitar speaks as a vocalist. I just want to confirm that and if proved correct, I want to develop that, because that is what I am! So please tell me, I will not pester you but a gentle yes and then a recommendation to improve would be nice. Thanks again.
His fingers are long
I've been there… quite often…
It is a beautiful and magical place.
And you pray someone is rolling tape.
Just… wow. I admired Steve Vai as a great instrumentalist but now he is also a great teacher

Steve, I have the Passion, but I've been struggling to find the Warfare. Can you help?
he's talking to yngwie

When Frank Vignola feels like playing some metal he wears colorful glasses and likes to be called Steve.

What words of wisdom from a guitar god!
You can find true coming from unexpected speeches. This is one of the more true and deep inspirational speech I've ever heard.
U L T R A Z O N E
Is it dumb that listening to him speak literally brings tears into my eyes?
"Fascinating player" …ie Yngwie Malmsteen.
People say he is the great but I don't think so I think he is great in technical playing …..musically not a great player ….
The way he talks about guitar playing sounds like the way Bruce Lee talks about martial art.
So Zen, he is
I love you Steve! You are so humble , kind and encouraging!!!!
i never understood his playing style
I love listening to all your sit downs Steve
OK. I got plenty of that… Coming from Vai that is inspiring. Really good dude.

When you ever feel useless, think about his guitar in this guitar lesson.
Nice Steve, Thanks…
How all legends become humble when they got older, look at this legend how modest he is, that is because he is great, if that makes sense.
I love how Vai never really gives guitar lessons 😀
Steve you are such an a amazing human being! This is a lesson and teaching in the true potential of spirituality and music. This is one of many of your gifts! thank you!
wonderfull!! wise man!!!
Take a drink every time he says technique
Still a lot of haters to him.
I love this guy!
I wish I had never met him
Amazing i really needed to hear this thank you wow im blown away ..i got this finally someone's agreed i sound like a robot…ok heres a bit of info sleep eat meditation then it wont seem so bleh ..i can see clearly its raining now haha raining rhythms and melodies
I don't even play guitar and this is totally relevant to what I do
“Technique”

Thank you sir I solud you your speech is better than tiory
Steve dropped some big real truths about how to live life. Great video
we get the passion, but what about the warfare?
finger envy
Steve seems like a very humble person and I like that a lot.
Priceless. His analogy to smelling a rose (passion) and letters not being poetry although necessary is spot on
I hear the Buddha all over his lesson.Niiiiiiiice!
“Passion comes with the right attitude”… Very true.
Interesting thoughts…
I am am actually recording this one

Thank you so much for this Steve Vai. Bless you
Geeez he's like the Bruce Lee of 🎸.
Only a man with god level of experience and real understanding can say like this.
Thanks Steve!
Or, when you achieve the chops of Steve Via (see around the 4:45'ish mark)…
"Passion eliminates time"…he is a smart man.
The guitar amateur is totally tattered; and you just delete my posts
hehe ;P
Is this about technique?
Are you religious
I'd like to introduce you to my religion
0:00 – 11:43
This is gold, is more than gold, it is inspiring. Thanks Steve.
Came to see Steve Vai play the guitar, stayed for his beautiful extempore
Anybody know where I can get those glasses?
I can appreciate your age and experience, perfect words even for a teenager son.
Wow, how toasted is he?😳
Dr. Steve Vai

So True!
I could easily spend the same amount of time listen to this man playing as I could listen to this man talking!! Amazing human this guy is!
This was garbage I don’t wanna hear Guru Steve I wanna play guitar
That´s why Chris Broderick will never write an epic and passionate tune that resonates with the world!
Every video I’ve watched of this guy. He’s basically told me to think about playing it an then I’ll be able to play it. I like the theory but I’m no good at the practical 😂
Someone should send this video to malmsteen. He has some technique …but nothing more.
Vai has something the others will never reach.
Too mucho talking son
Looks like sid Roth
My view of Vai’s credibility just skyrocketed with this talk of guitar, skill and life lesson. “Passion eliminates Time!” For example. – Ken in Hawaii
Not many can do it.
This video brought tears to my eyes. How insightful, what a legend

How great to have a free lesson from a Master.
Wooow Steve. You just teach one of the greatest lessons in music without playing a single note. My total respect
"Passion eliminates Time. Passion puts you in a timeless dimension of now." – Steve Vai
That and Ten thousand hours!
Thank you.
Words of wisdom on being an artist. But did you notice the frets on his guitar? That's the subject of another discussion altogether.
not
Steve can I please have one of your guitars to add to my collection 👍❤️😎✌️
What kinda loser dislikes such a lesson…
No lesson, but it is an advice. Thanks
Way too f-ing wordy! He's in love with hearing himself speak. Thanks, guy, for going on and on with out saying anything useful or very relevant.
what i like about vai is that he never appears intoxicated. so much for drugs and r&r
I love how Steve gets behind what is happening. Very calming, I find . Thanks Steve, for your wisdom. ✌️

Well done Steve.
Man, i just stood up, grabbed my guitar and spent the whole afternoon playing. This is a life lesson, not a guitar lesson.
12 mins waiting for Steve to Share one riff ,secret ,insight or,,that 7 more pattern that's uses to string skip effortlessly ??? nada !!
White backdrop for the guy who’s signature guitar is white. Great idea
"I was a very slow learner but I loved it"
great but that white backgroud is an eye killer
Why the guitar? 🙂
his hands are huge
Chamuyo flaco se dice en mi barrio ….speak tecnique -'0
If you take away his guitar in this video, it's a TEDtalk.
I thought we were gonna hear him play, not yap for twelve minutes 😉
;)+< ~(:
I'd watch your videos but every older video on YouTube skips like a scratched cd . And that's very annoying
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
