The Sleeping Thousand – meet composer Adam Maor

Hello, my name is Adam Maor,
I’m a composer. I’m writing the score for
“The Sleeping Thousand”… …to be performed
at Aix-en-Provence this summer. I’ve always been passionate
about the written word… …more so than other art forms. I worked
by writing poems… …even plays
with no voices… …were often combined
with text. So it was perfectly natural
for me. I went to
the workshop called… …”Opera Creation” at Aix
in 2012 and since then… …I stayed in touch and
really wanted a project. I met Yonatan Levy [librettist of The Sleeping Thousand]
in 2014… …and I went to see him
perform in a play… …with three other actors,
“Saddam Hussein” I found the content
to be… …rather ingenious but
I also had the impression… …that he had rediscovered
theatre of the Middle East. He really succeeded in combining… …contexts, cultures… …which was really quite
unique and impressive. I thought, that’s a great start
for an opera. It’s the story of… …a thousand prisoners who go on
a hunger strike all together. The country doesn’t know what to do
and anaesthetises them… …and… …everything that happens next. I studied classical composition
in Europe. I feel very attached to… …what’s called contemporary
concert music today. Along with that… …I’m becoming more and more
passionate about Middle Eastern music. And Middle Eastern classical music. This opera is in some ways… …the first time I can express… …various influences
in a way that’s… …clearer and calmer…. …than it was
in my chamber music. My writing style… …is solidly rooted in
concert music today. There’s other music
that I’m discovering… …that I’m studying… …for which I have a sense
of belonging which is… …a bit twisted by
my personal background… …by the history of… …of my country and culture
and how… …we, as a society,
fit into the Middle East. This research is both… …political and artistic,
esthetic. It’s also something
that takes me back… …to my family origins. For me, it’s something that… …is complex,
that goes beyond esthetics… …and that is always… …the back-and-forth
is also between… …politics and esthetics
between cultures.
